STEP 1: Take New Handles
The first step you have to take is to count your cupboard doors and drawers and buy handles for them. If you are not sure what to buy you can check out our guide on “Best cupboard handles to buy” and buy the best handles for your cupboard, and get your working tools ready to use.
STEP 2: Remove Old Handles If the Present
The 2nd step is to remove old handles and screws from the cupboard doors using the screwdriver. Take one old and one new handle and match the center holes of both handles if the center holes of both are the same in size so the work is easy you have to do is just put the new handle screws on the holes, place the handle on screws and tighten screws using a screwdriver. If the center holes of both handles are not the same then you need to make new holes as per the size of the handle you will learn this in the next steps.
STEP 3: Measure The Handle Center Holes
The 3rd step to do is to measure the center holes of the handle you have bought. Take a measuring tape and handle and place one end of the measuring tape on a hole center and measure the distance between one hole center to 2nd hole center.
STEP 4: Find Handle Position and Marking on The Door
Step 4 is to find the position on the door where your handle sits and mark the position perfectly to make holes and fix the handle. usually, most cupboards have three parts doors.
1). Main center doors
Commonly the handles of the main center doors of cupboards are placed in the center of the door and in some cases, handles are placed 2 inches above the cupboard lock.
Most of the cupboard’s main door size is between 70 to 80 inches. Measure the full length of the main door and divide it into two parts and mark it on the center point.
The door length is 70 inches so you have to mark 35 inches which is half of 70 inches then divide the handles screfixing holes distance into two. mark the half upper and half lower of the center point of the door. One thing to remember is all markings are marked opposite the hinges.
For example,
The distance between screw-fixing holes is 3 inches. You have to mark 1.5 inches upper and 1.5 inches lower of the center point and remove the center point to avoid any misconfiguration. Now your vertical marking is completed.
The horizontal general rule is to put the handle 2 inches from the edge of the door. Mark the 2 inches from the edge of the door where vertical marks are marked. For a couple of doors use a combination square to mark the same on both doors.
2). Base unit doors
Commonly base unit doors or bottom door handles are installed on the top side of the door. you can put the handle where you would like. generally, we put handles 2 inches from the top edge and 2 inches from the side edge. but one thing to take care is some handles have screw-fixing holes inside from the edge. you have to measure it also. It depends on the design of the handle.
For example,
The screw-fixing holes of the handle are 1/2 inch in from the edge of the handle and you want to put a handle 2 inch on the door so you have to add a half inch to your measurement from the top edge so now you should mark 2.5 inches from the top edge and from the side edge normal 2inches as you learned above.
3). Upper doors
Upper doors or top doors of cupboards are a little bit difficult to reach your hand to its handle that’s why the handles of top doors are installed on the bottom side of the door. The marking procedure for the upper doors is the same as the bottom doors you learned about above.
4). Drawer Handles
Drawer handles are also installed in the middle of each vertical and horizontal of the drawer face. Find the drawer center point same as you learned in step 4 main center door
or use a handle installation jig.
